According to Dominique Barbier, the fight began as an argument about Mayalene’s grades at RCHS and obedience to her mother’s rules.
“It’s the case of a teenager fighting the rules, trying to get rid of the authority. She can be very sweet but very willful. I knew this would come to a head,” said Barbier.
Breaking rules
This year at RCHS was Mayalene’s first in public high school, as she had been home schooled from the 8th grade to the 10th .
“I have an open mind, I was trying to see what she would do if I let her decide for herself,” said Barbier.
According to her mother and her friends, Mayalehe had been chafing under her mother’s authority increasingly prior to the January 5 fight. She had a boyfriend that she refused to introduce to her mother, and complained to friends about how controlling her mother was.
Among her RCHS friends, Mayalene used a nickname, “Aia”instead of her full name. “It was like she had a different personality. I used to call her the ouch girl, because in French we say “Aia” when someone is hurt,” said Dominique Barbier.
