Barbier, who is originally from France, works for the World Bank, and her daughter is bilingual. Although Mayalene generally received good grades at RCHS, she was having trouble in chemistry according to classmate Emily Welch. “When she didn’t get straight A’s, her mom would flip out on her,” said Welch.
‘This kid is gifted and in a sense, privileged. I’m not going to let that be wasted. I can’t bend on that,” said Dominique Barbier. “I confronted her, she was giving me the runaround. You have to have honesty about problems.”
Never let up
According to Welch, MayaIene’s struggles with her mother had intensified. Welch said that Mayalene often claimed to be physically abused by her mother, although Welch never witnessed such an incident.
“Aia said things were really abusive on her mother’s part. [Dominique] would toss her around, and she smashed her gamecube in the yard.” Welch also related an incident where Mayalene came to school with bruises covering her arms , and said that the bruises came from being thrown down a staircase by her mother, only a few weeks before the stabbing incident. Dominique says that the bruises came from karate, in which Mayalene was a red belt.
“That did not happen. Mayalene was going several times a week to karate. She is much bigger than me, much stronger.”
Dominique Barbier believes that the fight happened at least partly because of problems going back to Mayalene’s father, who left the family when she was very little.
“He got involved with drugs, I told him to get help or get out. He never came back. This was a deep issue with her, a hidden rage. I knew it would come out at some point,” said Dominique.
This matter is still under investigation by the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke declined to comment on the state’s case.
The Rappahannock Juvenile Court hearing for Mayalene Barbier will be held January 26.
