Wakefield places third and fifth in Cert amen
Competition
Three teams of WCDS Latin students recently traveled to the Flint Hill School in Oakton to compete in a regional Certamen contest, in which students answered questions on Latin language, Roman history and culture and Greek and Roman Mythology, to accumulate points. In this latest competition, Wakefield Country Day School won awards in two different categories. Its Level II Experienced Team, consisting of Amir Arsalan of Gainesville, and Jody Green and Ryan Kearney, both of Culpeper, earned a third place trophy, and its Level I Advanced Team, made up of Katie Huang of Amissville, Andrew Smith of Washington, and Rachel Wells of Warrenton, placed fifth. Bret Heddleston of Sperryville, Christine Pankow of Flint Hill and Tim Pressler of Front Royal also competed, representing WCDS in Level I match-ups.
College Panel
Last week, Wakefield’s Wednesday Assembly served as the setting for a special “College Panel,” with three WCDS graduates appearing as guest speakers before the 4th through 12th grade students.
The panel consisted of Christina Luke, a resident of Washington who currently attends the University of Virginia (UVA); James Nilan, a resident of Flint Hill who currently attends Virginia Tech and is a member of their ROTC program, and Alec Tbth of Front Royal, who also currently attends UVA. The three spoke of their experiences in successfully navigating the college entrance process with the help of WCDS college advisor Marsha Dowell, and they each described their perception of what it is like to be a college student. The group illustrated some of their daily experiences in the classroom and on campus and offered tips to students on maximizing their high school education experience in preparation for undergraduate studies.
