Both Dominique and Mayalene’s friend and classmate Emily Welch said that Mayalene often talked about being legally emancipated from her mother, and according to Welch Mayalene had done research on the Internet about the process. Dominique believes that Mayalene was increasingly breaking rules before the January 5 fight, concealing visits with her boyfriend and possibly frying recreational drugs.

Grades

In addition, according to both Dominique Barbier and Welch, Mayalene had been using a computer to falsify her school report cards as well as her mother’s signature, which is required by RCHS as proof that parents are aware of their children’s grades. Dominique Barbier found out about the deception when she tried to get transcripts of Mayalene’s grades as part of the application process for the competitive Washington International School, in which she wanted Mayalene to enroll
