Local weekly newspapers are fascinating entities. Eccentric, curious, whimsical, and often humorous they are as varied as the communities they serve. They capture and contribute much of the ongoing fabric of life in their localities while also playing a vital role in the chronicle of current and future social, political, and legal matters. Even casual thought, however, might cause one to wonder how these publications exist at all in the era of the bottom line, a question that doubtless gives many an editor pause as the weekly deadlines approach. How many dollars are there, after all, in stories about local politics, schools, businesses, and social activities? Both common sense and simple observation of the layout of a typical paper reveal the obvious: advertisements! Lots of them! And locally at least, lots and lots and lots and.(well, you get the idea) of real estate ads. It sometimes seems a miracle that any news whatsoever is covered.
