He was bom in Chicago and was raised by his grandparents in St. Paul, Minn. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with bachelor’s degrees in engineering and economics. He played on the university’s basketball team.
Before entering the field of development aid Mr. Manly worked in several fields, including shipping, coal mining and newspaper publishing and printing.
In the late 1940s, he helped publish a newspaper that his brother, Charles Manly, owned, the Falls Church Echo. Robert Manly nandled the production side and ran the commercial printing business.
Starting in the early 1980s Robert loved to .visit Rappahannock and was delighted to be able to make a home here. He claimed that the air here was better than anywhere else he knew. *
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Manly, five daughters - Judy Blakeney of Winthrop, Wash., Margie Petersen of Santa Rosa, Calif., Robin Hart of Terrace Park, Ohio;,Nicole Manly of Uganda and Washington, D.C. and Sidney Benner of Greeley, Colo; a half-brother; 11. grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration will be arranged at some future date.
