Academic Team
is victorious

The RCHS Academic Team competed successfully in a WVPT Pop Quiz match against the Covenant School of Charlottesville on Thursday, Jan. 12. The final score was Rappahannock 200 to Covenant’s 190.
The entire match appeared on television this past Sunday. The victory not only bolstered the team but sent them to Harrisonburg on Tuesday for Round 2 where they faced off against Turner Ashby High School. Moving right along, the team defeated the much larger Turner Ashby in Rockingham County by a score of 190-130. As a result of that victory, the Panthers earned the right to compete in the Pop Quiz Final Four.
In the semis RCHS lost to Robert E. Lee in Staunton which will now go on to face Charlottesville High School in the finals.
Team coordinator Dave Naser is optimistic for the future of the Rappahannock Academic Team.
“The level of competition and the difficulty of questions were high, but the team conducted themselves admirably and did advance to the Final Four. Tune in Sunday afternoon to WVPTTV to see the team’s performance.”
“We’re very proud of our team’s performance against larger public and exclusive private schools. Our Academic Competition Team kids are smart, quick, and young. Only one of the members of the team competing on TV is a senior. I believe they are capable of making the finals of this event next year,” said Nasar.
Covenant win
The student? who competed were: Chad Carroll, a senior; Jesse Palmer and Clay Vickers, juniors; and A.J. Collins, a freshman. In the toss-up round, the first category was Algebra, allowing the team to take an early lead. RCHS maintained that lead throughout the match until finally tying at 190 in round 3, the lightning round. Clay Vickers correctly answered a literature question about Ralph Waldo Emerson right before the final buzzer, giving the Panthers the win. All four students contributed to the victory by buzzing in as quickly as possible and correctly answering questions in Algebra, Geometry, Literature, Chemistry, and other academic areas.
The Academic team has been competing in Bull Run District competition this winter.
The entire team roster includes the following students: seniors, Eddie Taylor, Forrest Marquisee,Chad Carroll, Tom Gillis, Emily Hilscher, and Larry Oliver; juniors, Clay Vickers and Jesse Palmer; sophomore, Nathan Stout; freshman, A.J. Collins; and 8th grader, Kristin Taylor, The team is open to all students in grades 8-12 who are in good academic standing. While our major competition has been against Bull Rim District Schools, these students also competed successfully in the Knowledge Masters Open (KMO) last December, placing 18th among Virginia High Schools. The 8th and 9th graders also fielded a team which ranked 1st of all Virginia Middle Schools. Both KMO teams will compete again in April.
