Welch
joins the
sheriff race

James Christopher “J.C." Welch entered this year’s Sheriff race the old fashioned way, as he announced his bid at the Washington Fire Hall. After announcing his candidacy, Welch spent time talking with friends, family members, and supporters at the Washington Fire Hall. “It has been a professional goal of mine, to one day serve the citizens of Rappahannock as their sheriff,’’ said Welch, a lifelong county resident.
The election held this November is the first open Sheriff race in over 30 years, as it lacks an incumbent. Current RCSO Sheriff, Larry Sherertz has stated that he plans to retire and won’t be seeking re-election.
Enforcement career
Welsh lives in Sperryville and is currently a Criminal Investigations Sergeant for the Culpeper Police Department. Prior to his career move to Culpeper, Welch served as a road deputy for the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office. Welch said that he left the RCSO because of “different ideas
