LIGHT-HEARTED
SOULS
It is interesting to hear of ancient rituals regarding the departed. Beginning around 1600 B.C., Egyptians were buried with papyrus scrolls that served as guidebooks during their journey into the Underworld. These ' scripted and artfully illustrated * books of the Dead were filled with „ prescriptions that would help guide the dead through the many trials they would encounter after death. The dead must have lived righteous lives and, in death, must be able to reveal how virtuous • they had been. The final and most significant trial involved weighing the deceased's heart and measuring its weight against a feather, representing the truth. If - the heart were so filled with sin as to outweigh the feather, the soul could not enjoy eternal life. It was condemned, instead, to be eaten by the monster Ammit.
