“The research says for every $1 spent you get $4 back in tourism,” she said, adding that tiie county should consider hiring a full- or part-time professional tourism promoter. “We need to think about how to generate revenue other than from taxes.”
Sperryville has all the makings of a tourism hot spot, she said, but the village needs to be marketed differently.
Adolfi has attracted visitors to The House on Water Street by offering packages that target specific markets, like mother-daughter getaways and bachelorette parties, and combine the many experiences offered by Rappahannock’s wineries, restaurants, spas, farms and outdoor opportunities.
“It’s taking what we have and packaging it so more people want to come here,” she said. “We have so much that we’re not promoting in any kind of organized or systematic way.”
The village also has what Adolfi calls “The Hidden Jewels of Sperryville”: local herbalists, spa owners, yoga instructors and the like that offer what tourists want, but do not have prominent storefronts.
