Rappahannock County’s Veterans of Foreign Wars are working to build a lasting tribute to members of the military who have done so much to preserve freedom in the United States. And they are hoping that other Rappahannock residents join them in the effort.
Members of VFW Post 1150 met Tuesday evening at the Sperryville Fire Hall to finalize ‘ plans for a memorial to “All Veterans Who Honorably Served Their Country,” which will be erected at the top of the main stairway in the Sperryville Cemetery. Post Quartermaster James Swindler and his wife, Phyllis, are spearheading the monument campaign. Swindler said work on the granite obelisk will begin in the next week at Rinker and Frye Memorials in Mount Jackson and the goal is to have the monument in place by Memorial Day. When the monument is finished, the public will be invited to a ceremony for its unveiling.
