Community policing
Welch is a strong believer in keeping the community involved in law enforcement. “Rappahannock is a close knit community,” Welch said, “One of my goals is to get everybody working together.”
Welch proposes to found a board of fire and rescue leaders in order to enhance communications. “This board will have the function of dealing with issues that may arise between Fire and Rescue and the Sheriffs Office,” he said. Welch said that often times the volunteer departments are the first on the scene of any accidents and a board would help each department develop a better working relationship.
If elected, Welch promised to develop a “Quarterly Citizens Update,” a public forum for citizens to voice their opinions concerning the Sheriffs office. He also plans to continue programs founded by the RCSO to increase communications with the elderly to increase their safety and reduce their vulnerability to criminals.
Welch will be holding additional public meetings in area fire halls as he continues his campaign. Current RCSO employee, Major Christopher Williams has also announced his run for Sheriff. Other unverified candidates include RCSO employee Lt. Connie Smith and Wayne Sumner, a member of the State Police crime investigation unit in Culpeper.
