The crowd Monday night was comprised of residents from all parts of the county, regardless of whether their properties would be directly affected by the power lines.
“It is a county-wide issue,” Rifaat said. “We want to disseminate information so the citizens can respond.”
Rifaat encouraged citizens to write letters and call their representatives, as well as donate money to PEC’s effort, which includes costs for signs, bumper stickers, expert analyses and legal counsel.
“We are going to have to put our dollar where our heart is,” she said.
RLEP founder Phil Irwin was at the center of the organization’s two battles against power line corridors in the county in the 1970s. RLEP spent $110,000 on a campaign to oppose construction of the current right-of-way that Dominion is looking to expand.
“We are up against a Goliath,” Irwin said. Tm not saying we’re going to lose this time, but everyone needs to get together ... because it’s going to take a massive effort to mat this thing.”
PEC will host a meeting on the power line proposal tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rappahannock County High School auditoriuih.
