Archaeologists, craftspeople, builders and historians spent 18 months piecing together exactly how Montpelier would have looked to the Madisons. And the carpenters are also charged with keeping their eyes peeled for artifacts.
“We’re trained to look for things,” McBride said. “As we dismantle the building and recreate it, we find clues as to how it would have looked.” For example, some shingles from Montpelier’s original roof were found in the attic. The cypress shingles now atop the house were modeled after those discoveries.
