last year and now plays football at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, was the fourth leg of that team, and Stephens said he has not yet chosen Harris’s successor.
Stephens said he expects those 400-meter relay runners to excel individually as well. Makela runs the 1600-meter and 3200-meter events, Palmer runs the 400-meter and 800meter events and Smith is strong in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and sprints.
Graduation took a lot of the girls team’s key members, including Samantha Brown who made it to the state meet in the high jump last year. But Stephens said he still expects to see some good performances from this year’s team.
Among those to watch are senior Hannah Besecker, who excels in the shot put and discus, and lOth-grader Marie Scavetti, who will be a strong performer in the hurdles.
The team’s first meet of this season begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Luray.
