By June 30, Rappahannock Countys leaders will have agreed on the budget for the next fiscal year. And with that in mind, a couple citizens at the County Board of Supervisors’ afternoon meeting Monday asked for bold changes to be made to Rappahannock’s budget process.
Monira Rifaat, of the Piedmont District, asked why the county schools budget - which accounts for roughly 65 percent of the county’s total budget - is formed separately before the rest of the budget is formed.
Prior to Rifaat’s comments, County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell had discussed teacher pay increases to be included in his $12.3 million budget proposal.
Chappell said he knows the budget is a “touchy subject” and that is why he is proposing a 4.5 percent pay increase, rather than the 6 and 7 percent raises some neighboring counties are proposing. He also said he expects the school board to make some cuts to his initial budget plan.
