Rifaat said. “And the result is that the average citizen out there is not listening now, they’re not paying attention, they’re not coming to the school board meetings.”
Rifaat said she wants the supervisors to reform the budget-making process to make it less fragmented.
“The school board’s asking us to come up with another $500,000, and that would be rough,” she said.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the overall county budget is usually issued at the same time or within two weeks of the school budget being presented to the supervisors, and he added that any tax effects for property owners would be advertised before they are approved.
He also said that part of the non-schools portion of the county budget depends on revenue from other government agencies, so county leaders wait to see the exact amounts from those other entities.
“I don’t like the way our taxes have been going up,” Rifaat said.
