“Arne’s strength became a big factor,” said Brown. “He also had the sheer will behind him to compete at a State level.”
Assistant Varsity coach Hodge Miller was also impressed with Utne’s spirit. “He is an excellent example of how a first year wrestler can be competitive,” said Miller about Utne, “He had the determination and the will and courage to step out on the mat and do it.”
The Panther wrestling team sent three wrestlers to the State Championship and finished 15th out of the 49 teams at the match.
Improving chances
This was Eric Brown’s first year coaching the RCHS wrestling program.
Miller grew up wrestling under Brown in Team Cobra, a middle school wrestling club that Brown runs with Eddie Jenkins, Rappahannock’s Junior Varsity Coach.
Other upcoming Rappahannock varsity wrestlers have become a part of Team Cobra and are training hard for the upcoming season.
Brown noted that it was a good year for the program, but he would like to increase the level of competition for the school as they move forward towards the next season.
“It’s a good opportunity for a small school to put themselves on the map,” Brown said, noting that even a small team of athletes can bring home an individual championship.
“If we can get some more kids next year who want to give us two years of hard effort, we could see some major improvements in the program and some great wins at a state level,” he added.
