on the kids
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Chappell is
putting his head out on the chopping block. He’d
like to get his budget beefed up enough to give his staff more money. He knows that to keep Rappahannock County Public Schools “second to none” that he needs to have the best staff that he can possibly muster.
You’re only as good as your people;
With few places to live in this county, many teachers are forced to commute from other areas. While Rappahannock County is a beautiful place to work, you have to live as well and making those dollars stretch is a challenge.
Each year, teachers are lost to other counties paying higher salaries. *
Hoping to keep up, Chappell would like to sweeten the pot. And he’d like to do it equitably.
Bus drivers wouldn’t be excluded or put last on the list. Every employee would get a boost.
Those in the county whose children are no longer in the school system or who are on fixed incomes or simply have a problem with tax increases of any kind should take a long, hard look at what is being requested.
Drive 30 miles east to Fauquier County where the proposed school budget is upwards of $110 million. They're building a third high school and an active community group is lobbying for more elementary schools and another middle school.
The profession of a teacher should be as valued as that of a doctor or lawyer.
It isn’t and that’s a shame. These are the folks that nurture your children when you aren’t with ihem.
Don’t they deserve more?
