Chantal Obert, which included fancy French gourmet dinners and warm smiles, I was out exploring the Prado, or the Reina Sofia or sitting quietly in the coolness of countless cathedrals. I dropped Euros in the empty case of a classical guitarist who was playing near the Palacio Real and had tapas one afternoon near the Atocha Metro Stop. I rode by train to Toledo where the shops are filled with replica pistols from the 15th. Century, medieval swords and statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. It is also home to several Jewish synagogues and narrow steep streets that twist through the town like a human maze.

Our youngest son was attending a Spanish/soccer immersion program in another suburb called Las Rozas and I would visit on days when they had games. Their first regimen in the morning was a jog around the grounds at 7 a.m. On several days, they encountered wild boar. I didn’t see any but there was a natural reserve close to where I was staying and, according to the Oberts, wild boar are common much like black bears are to Rappahannock.

I had no cell phone. No watch. No laptop. I didn’t rent a car. I didn’t check email. I didn’t hear phones ringing and I had no deadlines. Every other day or so I would visit a nearby shop
