the planned Capitol Building westward down the Mall and ended at a line running south from the proposed location of the President’s House. L’Enfant envisioned that an equestrian statue of George Washington, voted for by the Continental Congress in 1783, could be erected at that intersection (Figure 2).
But it was not until after Thomas Jefferson' became President in 1801, that it was finally decided the American Prime Meridian should pass through the middle of the President’s House, not Capitol Hill. This meridian was laid out in the summer of 1804, and by October permanent markers were in place.

The northern • marker was a stone obelisk, roughly four feet high, set up on Peter’s Hill (now called Meridian Hill) along the line of what is now 16th Street NW. It was called the “Meridian Stone.” • The Prime Meridian fine ran from there through the front door of the President’s House and out the back door.
