how untamed nature seems here when I traveled back to the Midwest on business. As you fly over the countryside it looks so tidy, so controlled. And close up, it’s no different. It’s green and lovely but it’s a very different kind of nature from what I experience every day here.
I'm aware of course that those early Midwestern settlers didn’t find the place nearly so easy as it might appear now. The winters were fierce and their homes were not the well-insulated places we burrow into these days. The wind could be a curse. And I surely don’t envy those early housewives the constant fight against the dirt blowing into their homes. -
But these days it has a deceptively tame look. No matter where or how I look at our place here in Amissville, tame is not a word I’m ever tempted to use! The day we leave is the day the earth will begin attempting to erase all trace of our existence.
And while there are days when I curse the vines and the snakes and shake my fists at the rabbits and deer who destroy my hard work in the garden, I also find some comfort in this. In an era where we worry much about the damage humans seem to be inflicting on the earth Tm kind of glad to see she’s not just going to lay down and take it! At least in our little comer of Virginia it’s clear to me that earth is going to give as good as it gets!
