School Board reduces costs; takes environmentfriendly steps: Each year from 2004 through 2007, the Rappahannock County School Board tightened its belt before asking the Rappahannock supervisors for additional monies to fund teacher salary increases. The Board trimmed expenses by over $300,000 between 2004 and 2007.

Additional Cost Savings and / or environment-friendly projects for the 2007-2008 School Year:

• Position reductions: two full-time positions will be part-time at a savings of nearly $50,000.

• Energy Savings: The RCPS spent $6,800 to install a high-efficiency hot water heater to save an estimated 100 gallons of fuel oil / week previously needed to heat water for the RCES kitchen. Cost savings: 3,600 gallons of oil per year @ approximately $8,000, less estimated cost of electricity @ approx $4,000 = estimated $4,000 savings annually (plus reduction in emissions).

• Energy Savings: The School Board approved the recommendation by the Savings Through Energy Management (STEM) Team to replace nearly 100 incandescent bulbs (300 Watt ea) at RCHS with Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs). The initial cost of $3,000 should produce up to a 75 percent reduction in electricity usage. Staff members will be fully trained on safe, environmentally sound handling of broken CFLs.

• The Athletic Director will teach two classes at a savings of $10,000.

• The RCPS will start using 5 percent bio-diesel this fall. This will reduce emissions and reliance on foreign oil.

• New Assistant Superintendent Dr. Becky Greer is working with the schools to implement a re-cycling project.
