What’s more, the quantity of median home sale prices has sharply declined during the same period, according to Hooper’s report.
In 2000, “58 percent of homes sold in Fauquier County were affordable to families in the low-income category,” the report states. By contrast, only 12 percent of homes sold fell into that category six years later.
The picture got worse last year. “A snapshot of active listings in February 2007 shows...only 42 of 676 (6 percent) listings in the affordable range,” according to the Hooper analysis. “Of these 42 affordable homes, 31 are condos.”
For many years, county government has contributed cash to the Fauquier Housing Corp. and Habitat for Humanity, to provide homes and housing assistance to county residents.
In partnership with both groups, Fauquier County helped build a 17-unit “affordable” housing community near Opal. The county donated the site and used a $750,000 grant to provide the project’s infrastructure.
