THE NEW ORLEANS

JAZZ FUNERAL

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, there has been renewed interest in New CMeans’ music and culture. The Jazz Banal is a unique mix of African spirituality and FrencWSpamsh martial music traditions. It typically begins with a march from the funeral home to the cemetery, during which the band (days somber hymns and dirges. Once the deceased is buried, however, and family and friends “cut the body loose,” the band makes a remarkable shift to decidedly more upbeat music. This swinging tribute of music and dancing is intended as a celebration of the life of the deceased. The Jazz Funeral's message for all of us is that, while death may be a sad aflair, life is joyous.
