ping plaza and pick up the Herald Tribune and an English version of El Pais. I caught up on some magazine articles but didn’t open the pages of several books that I had brought.

I felt no urgency to see everything, visit everything, experience everything about Madrid. There was no pressure except to be. I would simply let each day unfold and offer what pleasures it would and ultimately did.

I walked through the gardens around the palace in San Idelfonso, marveled at the crystal glassware at the Museo del Vidrio and nearly wept at the beauty of the cathedral in Segovia. I lit candles for my son, for his future and for my family faraway - a ritual from my Catholic days. When you are sitting in the solitude of these ancient cathedrals surrounded by masterpieces hanging on the walls, it is easy to imagine the the processions of clergy glad in gold woven vestments and to smell the once heavily laden air of incense.

My limited Spanish ' improved to the point that by the end of my stay, I was being asked which bus stopped where and did this train go to Nueva Ministerios.
