Monument Society, but the soil at the Jefferson Stone site was just too weak and unstable to support the massive tonnage of what became the Washington Monument. That’s the reason the monument is not lined up with the White House, nor the Capitol.
Why an American
Prime Meridian?
There was much to measure. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 doubled the size of the United State and maps were needed. New states in the Ohio Territory required that boundaries be surveyed. The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806, was instructed to determine the latitude and longitude of key points and commercial routes. Private property needed plats. It was logical that all such measurements be calculated from the seat of Government, from the American Prime Meridian, from our own zero longitude.
