“I want a bonus for doing good work,” said Rappahannock County School Board member Wes Mills at Tuesday's meeting.
“Plaques and banners are nice but I’d rather see more money coming to the schools,” added Mills.
While said light heartedly, Mills was referring to a new statewide incentive program introduced by Governor Tim Kaine that would reward school divisions for having schools that are fully accredited, have mastered the SOLs (Standards of Learning, and have exceeded the minimum competency standards among other academic achievements.
School divisions would receive points leading to various levels of state recognition.
The last budget go round for the Rappahannock County Public Schools budget received strong support from some and criticism from others. With the state funding formula based on the local composite index Rappahannock County (which is viewed as a very wealthy county in tiie state’s eye) often foils short in funds received for the schools.
To that end. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Chappell has spearheaded the formation of a new group called the Rappahannock County and School Funding Team.
It’s mission was approved by the board on Tuesday evening and states: “The Rappahannock County and School Funding Team win work coUaboratively with elected State and Federal representatives and selected citizens to increase State funding for Rappahannock County government and the Rappahannock County Public Schools. The team will also make recommendations to the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors on ideas to relieve pressure on local property owners.”
Chappell expressed optimism about this partnership between the the School Board and the Supervisors to begin looking at funding issues for the schools.
