“It’s got a real good rock formation,’’ Miller explained. “If it’s too silty or if it’s got the wrong pH, the fish don’t hang around.”
Miller stocks about 200 rainbows twice a year in the spring and fall. He estimated that about 75 percent of the stocked fish die during summer.
Some of the fish get picked off by herons, eagles and hawks. Others succumb to warm water temperatures.
The fish need to have water under 70 degrees or they become uncomfortable and could die, so April through June and September through December are the best times to catch a rainbow, he said.
Miller rents his section of the Thornton to the Turkey Mountain Fly Fishing Club.
The 30 or so members pay dues and can invite guests to join them on the river. But nonmembers would be considered poachers, because the river is on private property.
“It’s like any other part of the farm, it’s a revenue producer” Miller said.
