Rappahannock Volunteer Medical Transportation joins with American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program
to provide a lift to Rappahannock Residents
Due to the need of many in Rappahannock County for transportation to medical appointments, a group of local churches and community organizations cooperatively developed a program of volunteer medical transportation in 2004 - also known as RappMedRides. On September 25, the American Cancer Society will hold a brief training for volunteer drivers, so Rappahannock drivers can transport people to cancer treatment under the ACS Road to Recovery program. Until now, drivers from Fauquier and Culpeper have had to transport Rappahannock patients. This can also be a refresher training for those already driving under RappMedRides. New volunteers are encouraged to come!
The training will be Tuesday, September 25 at the library. Lunch will be served at 12:30 pm, then the training from 1 to 3 pm will be given by Julie Overbaugh from the American Cancer Society.
Most of the ongoing scheduling for the volunteer transportation has been through RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), for drivers 55 and older and riders 60 and older, and through Sharon Pyne at Social Services for younger drivers and riders. For RSVP contact Lola Walker at 825-3100, ext. 3358, or Darcey Canton at the Rappahannock Senior Nutrition Center, 675-2615. Drivers can be reimbursed for gas mileage. Volunteers under 55 and those needing a ride under 60, cadi Sharon Pyne is at 675-3313.
Coordinators call volunteers to schedule rides; volunteers then call riders to make arrangements, but drivers’ phone numbers are kept confidential. Volunteers will keep rider information confidential, also. Those needing rides should try to make the request at least a week ahead.
Anyone who is interested in the training, or who can’t attend the training but is interested in being a volunteer driver or finding out about the program, please call Judy Reidinger at 9879600, or call Lola Walker or Sharon Pyne.
