Now the river is much cleaner than it once was.
Upstream from Konick is Mount Vernon Farm, where Cliff Miller stocks rainbow trout along a 1.5-mile stretch of the Thornton.
Miller's section of the river is a veritable smorgasboard for trout, which feed on macroinvertebrates like stoneflies and mayflies. Tests performed as part of RappFLOWs analysis of the Thornton River revealed more than 25 varieties of macroinvertebrates in that area.
“Right here at the confluence of the north and south fink, there’s as high a count [of macroinvertebrates] as anywhere in the upper Rappahannock River Basin,” Miller said.
