July 20 speeds were clocked at 40,41, and 44 mph - all of these clearly over the 25 mph speed limit set for the town - and within just a few miles of being considered “reckless driving” if the motorists had been ticketed.
“I’m just wondering what the next steps will be,” asked Gary Schwartz who serves as the chairman of the town’s planning commission and also has a bed and breakfast establishment - the Heritage House - along Main Street.
“Pm speaking as a concerned citizen of the town," emphasized Schwartz who maintains that speeding is a serious problem.
Council member Claudia Mitchell agreed with Schwartz that speeding was an ongoing issue and Town Clerk Laura Dodd agreed to phone Dave Cubbage of the Virginia Department of Transportation. “I know that they have some information about ‘best practices’ for small towns,” said Dodd, “and an inventory of things for “traffic calming” techniques.
