August’s speaker will be Brandy Station historian Joe McKinney who will speak on Confederate general "Wade Hampton," reportedly the largest landowner in the South with plantations in South Carolina and Mississippi. When South Carolina seceded Hampton raised a legion of soldiers using personal funds to pay for the rifles for the infantry and guns for the artillery. Joe McKinney lives on the Brandy Station battlefield and is a long-time Civil War historian. A graduate of West Point, he retired as a Lt. Colonel after serving in Vietnam and at the Army’s Command and Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. In 2006 he published the only thorough history of the June 9, 1863 Battle of Brandy Station.
