Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Chappell has long touted Rappahannock County Public Schools as having high standards in academic excellence. He anticipates that both the high school and the elementary school will be “fully accredited” when the next state report is issued. The School Board approved his proposed goals for the 20072008 year which include monitoring student progress on AP exams, the Cambridge tests and the SATs, increasing attendance and punctuality rates, increasing the number of students in post secondary education and meeting the “adequate yearly progress” targets as defined by No Child Left Behind. One significant goal that Chappell emphasized was a major focus on math and devising strategies to improve student performance across the board. With an emphasis on academics, Chappell would also like to see the school’s athletic program rise to the same level. To that end, and with a new athletic director in place, Chappell would like to move forward with a plan that develops the whole student — a balance of academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. He’d like to see the best coaches serving in the schools with good compensation for their efforts, a strong relationship with boosters and a sense of pride that will only catapult the athletic programs along with the academic successes that Rappahannock schools have enjoyed. It’s a lofty goal. But Chappell has some excellent help. Dr. Becky Greer has joined him as assistant superintendent of human resources and mstruction. Robin Puryear and Andy Hippie will lead the charge at the high school while Carol Johnson, along with her new assistant principal, Cathy Jones, will do their part at the elementary school. Chappell has a new athletic director - Bob Czekaj - as well as a new football coach - Mike Williams School starts on August 27 for the public school system in Rappahannock. If you get a chance to donate some school supplies, bid on a silent auction item at Back to School night or attend one of the upcoming sports games, consider yourself privileged. There is a strong, good wind in the school sails making his motto of “second to none” something that every citizen in thia county should be proud to recognize.
