“We tend to like to avoid the crowds,” Paine said. “You see a lot of hikers like in White Oak Canyon, but not too many fishermen.”
“Brookies” are the only trout species native to Virginia. They can be found in the Thornton, but are more common in Shenandoah.
“Brook trout are smaller [than rainbows], but when you catch one you’re catching the real thing,” Miller said.
The Turkey Mountain club is a catch-and-release outfit and members use barbless hooks. The hooks make catching a fish more difficult, but also cause less harm.
“If you use a spinning rod and worms it’s easy to catch stuffy Miller said. “It’s a lot harder to catch a fish without a barb, because the fish can more easily spit out it out.”
For some, that challenge is one of the main reasons for fishing.
“There are those who fish to eat them and there are those who fish for the raw joy” Miller said. “There are those who just enjoy being out in the water and making a fish - which is pretty smart, considering there are a lot of people who are trying to catch him during the year—take a bite.”
