On a muggy afternoon in June, when streams in the county were running considerably higher than they are now, Konick walked and canoed along his stretch of the Thornton.
His lure barely broke the surface of the water before he got his first bite. It was a rock bass, too small to eat - that one went to his cat.
Konick explained some of the changes he’s seen on the Thornton throughout the years.
Before the Sperryville Wastewater Plant was built, the river used to stink after floods, he said. The facility was installed in the mid-1980s, but it took about 10 years before the effects started to show.
