McCain, a U.S. Senator from Arizona, won nearly 53 percent of the 710 votes in the county in the Republican primary. He also won each of Rappahannock's six voting precincts. --•j- Taking second for the Republicans in Rappahannock was Mike Huckabee. who received 36 percent of the votes. Following Huckabee in the county were Ron Paul with 6.7 percent of the votes and Mitt Romney with 2.9 percent. Fred D. Thompson and Rudy Giuliani each received less than 1 percent of the votes.
McCain's best results in the county were in Sperryville, where nearly 60 percent of the voters chose him. His closest contest was in Flint Hill, where he took 47 percent of the votes, while Huckabee took 36 percent and Paul took 13 percent. the Texas congressman’s best showing in Rappahannock.
McCain won the Virginia Republican primary with 51 percent of the votes. Huckabee finished second statewide with about 40 percent.
