That shirt and I go back a long way, back to when I was 11, or maybe 12. I was one of those kids who got sent away to summer camp every year, so their parents could have some time by themselves. I think my mother felt just a little guilty about that; anyway, she bought me this shirt as a sort of a consolation prize for not going with them to Maine. She got it a few sizes too big so it would last a few years. I wore it everywhere.

Like I told you, the shirt was cotton, and it wasn’t really warm. But 1 wore it anyway over just a tee shirt, even in the cool August evenings in upstate New York. It was warm enough.

I didn’t know anything about love back then, but there was a girl at camp maybe a year or two older than I who left me breathless every time I saw her.
