He and his wife Anne and three sons (Russell, Will and Aaron) based the stable at their Holston Hollow farm in the Holston Valley area near Bristol.
Haynes was well known on the mid-Atlantic steeplechase circuit, and was often seen driving the truck and trailer hundreds of miles to various race meets and racetracks.
Havnes spent $1,500 to purchase Rowdy Irishman, a burly bay gelding with little success on the flat, as a steeplechase prospect. He won his jump debut in 1994 and went on to capture nine races including, four Grade I stakes.
In 1995, he won three of seven starts, including the Grand National, and finished second to Lonesome Glory in the Colonial Cup and on the seasonal earnings list.
Two years later, he again won the Grand National and settled for second (beaten a halflength ) to Lonesome Glory in the Colonial Cup.
Rowdy Irishman won back-toback runnings of the 3-mile Iroquois Steeplechase (Gr. I) in 1998 and 1999 Only the presence of Lonesome Glory (a five-time champion and Hall of Famer) prevented Rowdy Irishman from winningat least one Eclipse Award.
Funeral services were held Jan 27.
