The only fuel I have to buy right now is propane for cooking, domestic hot water and heating the house in cold weather. I’m considering putting solar water tubes on the roof and getting a wood cook stove that also heats water and installing baseboard radiators. I have access to firewood, so this could work, but I’m still going to need gas for the chainsaw. And the solar water tubes are expensive and may not fully heat the house in winter. Stay tuned.
Considering that I had \ never built a house before and had to take a number of gambles, I would give myself a “B” overall. I’m living with all the conveniences I had on the grid: refrigerator, washing machine, computers, CD and DVD player, etc. And I only have to do about an hour of maintenance a month. I’m planning oh eventually getting the main house at Jordan River Farm off the grid, although it will be a much larger challenge.
