The pony field masters chases —also open to junior riders mounted on suitable horses, in their own division — are for junior riders mounted on fairly hunted ponies. That means they hunted at least half the current hunt season.
In the chases, entrants follow a mounted leader, a “field master,” just like in the hunt field, over a course of jumps (about two miles, approximately 10 fences.)
The group then stops, or slows, at a given point before being released by the master for a dash to die finish line. The final “race” is usually less than a quarter mile.
