to Coopers town, where we all go on the train to New York and home. Ginny stayed with her girlfriends at the other end of the car, laughing and shrieking and hollering and paying me no attention at all. She wasn’t wearing my shirt. I walked past them at least three times, supposedly on my way to the toilet, but she ignored me.

I was pretty miserable by the time we reached Grand Central and everyone tumbled off the train and said their goodbyes. I stood there in the station looking around for my mother, when suddenly Ginny was standing in front of me. “That was really fun,” she said. And then she kissed me on the lips. I’m surprised I ever washed my mouth again.
