McCain also won primaries in Maryland and D C. to pad his lead over Hucknbee in the race for the Republican presidential nominee. McCain has 789 delegates compared to 241 for Huckabee. according to the Associated Press. The winning Republican nominee will need 1,191 delegates.

Voter turnout

Some 38 percent of Rappahannock's active voters went to the polls Tuesday. Of the 2.010 people that voted, 1,300 participated in the Democratic primary and 710 in the Republican contest.

The busiest voting precinct in the county was Amissville. where 417 people voted. Amissville was also the most evenly split between turnout for the two parties' primaries, with about 53 percent voting in the Democratic contest and 47 percent voting in the Republican.

Chester Gap was the only precinct where a majority of voters participated in the Republican primary. More than 58 percent of the precinct's 135 voters cast ballots in the GOP contest.

Sperryville was the precinct with the heaviest partisan participation. Some 75 percent of the precinct’s 381 voters cast ballots in the Democratic primary. *
