Sometimes being close to the action works, sometimes it doesn’t. Warrenton shooter Douglas Lees prefers to use his 300 mm Nikon lens to get in tight and personal with steeplechasing but, as the headless horse at right from Morven Park shows, it can nip off important portions of the photo. Below, his 2007 Eclipse Award winner from Great Meadow has all the ingredients of a champion - color, action, diagonal lines, tautness, and a feeling of ‘what happened next’ that marked this one a winner.
