Generator use
Can I get by without a generator? Yes, but several times a year it’s beneficial to “equalize” or overcharge the batteries and this would require several days of totally sunny skies to do without a generator, which doesn’t happen very often, especially in winter when the days are shortest.
Would increasing the number of panels or batteries solve the problem? Yes, but considering that each panel and each battery costs $1,000, renting a generator for those few occasions is the most cost-effective way for me to go.
Solar shading
How effective is the solar shading? Too effective! The sun is hot! Even when the sun’s out on the coldest days, I have to open windows to keep the temperature below 75 degrees.
How many windows is too many for the south side of a well-insulated house? I’m sure there are formulas, but in my situation, if you look at the picture, that’s too many. Unless I’m planning on growing vegetables indoors, I would have reduced my window area at least 30 percent.
