Photo pro takes
a new angle

He has the physique of a long-distance runner and the eye of an eagle. Add in a bit of intuition and a lifelong understanding of the sport: Photographer Douglas Lees has found a winning combination.
The Warrenton native recently won the media Eclipse Award, a national prize given for the best racing photograph published in 2007.
His shot from the International Gold Cup in October at Great Meadow bowled over the judging panel with its technical correctness, rich color, taut angle and highspeed action.
It was the second Eclipse for Lees, 57.
“It feels phenomenal. I’m just blown away to win again," said Lees, a freelance photographer and insurance agent. Lees’ photos regularly appear in the Times newspapers, as well as trade publications around the nation, and are featured in several books.
“I’ve been trying for many years to get another award, so this is a great thrill," Lees said. “The most important thing about this photo is that both the horse and the rider were alright after the spill."
