Fve had my off-grid house up and running for just over a year and have been living there full time for over six months and it's time to take stock.

What worked? What didn’t? What would I do differentiy?

My original goals were to get off the electric grid and ultimately become energy independent. I built a 1,000square-foot cottage on a concrete slab with eight 175-watt solar electric panels on the roof and six eight-volt industrial batteries for storage. I over-sized the system in the hopes of never having to use a back-up generator to charge the batteries, and calculated the size of the batteries that would be needed to see me through three days of total darkness.

I built the house on a south-facing slope and used eves that would effectively shade the interior in the summer and let in the full sun in winter to reduce my heating bill. I had tubing installed in the concrete slab for radiant floor heat, and used a propane water heater and electric pump to circulate hot water to heat the slab.
