Arthur W. Arundel, owner and publisher of The Fauquier Democrat, has decided to sell Arlington radio station WAVA to “move on to a change of scenery in journalism and public affairs.”
Starting in 1961, Arundel and WAVA pioneered the development of the all-news radio format and on-the-air editorials. The independent news station has served as a launching pad for many network and wire service correspondents.
A former CBS news and UPI correspondent, Arundel bought the station in 1961 as a country music operation, then called WARL, and launched the All News idea. WAVA-FM is now the only FM station here or anywhere else in the United States broadcasting all news all the time. Two other Washington stations, WRC-AM and WTOP-AM, now carry fulltime news, as do AM stations in most of the country’s other major cities.
The two corporate groups which have separately bought the two WAVA stations plan soon to change the format of WAVA-FM to contemporary music and WAVA-AM to a religious format, according to papers they have filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
Mr. Arundel also owns The Reston Times, The Rappahannock News and the Loudoun Times-Mirror.
