Many teens and adults alike have mistaken ideas about alcohol, Dr. Casson said.
Alcohol is sometimes thought of as a stimulant while it actually is a depressant. Often a person drinking becomes talkative and outgoing. This “high” however, is the result of alcohol reducing the brain’s control over the person’s behavior. If enough is taken, Dr. Casson added, drowsiness, sleep, or even death can result.
Teenagers drink for a number of reasons. Some take a drink at a social gathering to feel comfortable among others. Others yield to pressure from friends so as not to appear “sissy.” And still another factor is that people grow up as they are taught, and sometimes the example is not of the best, Dr. Casson said.
People today have not learned to experience and cope with stress, and instead retreat from it in one way or another, he said.
Dr. Casson noted that the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation has Local Alcoholism Services offices throughout Virginia to help people of all ages with drinking problems.
