In the year of 1749, a young surveyor began practicing his trade over the land that now forms these “Piedmont” counties of Virginia. The young man showed a particular dedication to both his work and to government service. His name was George Washington and his contributions to his state and nation have never since been equalled.
Over two centuries have passed since Washington’s day—two centuries that have seen countless changes across these United States. And certainly this land of ours that Washington surveyed has also changed in those two hundred years. But many people of these counties still reflect the same reverence for daily work and the same respect for community service that were so vital at the birth of a new nation.
At the present time, volunteer rescue squads and Are departments in this area are involving both exceptional efforts and exceptional people. Civic and religious work also remain hallmarks of many of our local communities.
